Dustin Penner eager to face Oilers – plus First Goal Contest

March 30, 2012 By John Hoven

Recognize the guy above?  Don’t feel bad if you can’t quite place him. He’s only played in two games since the Kings traded for Jeff Carter a little more than a month ago.

However, with number-77 suffering an ankle injury late in Wednesday’s game vs. the Flames, Brad Richardson may have a shot at sneaking back into the line-up tonight vs. the Oilers.

But, you probably can’t think about a Kings-Oliers game these days without mentioning Dustin Penner and/or Ryan Smyth.  Or can you? Is the former still a story? After all, the trade that brought him to LA was over a year ago now.

“It still means something to me,” said Penner, when speaking to MayorsManor before leaving for Canada earlier this week. “It’s not like there’s a rivalry or (extra) motivation to play harder against them because I got traded from there. Subconsciously, I think I probably want to play harder against them because of my ex-teammates there. I know them and we always had that comradery and natural ribbing inside the dressing room. Now, you get a chance to do it from the other side. It probably stings a bit more.”

In three games played vs. the Oilers since switching to a Kings jersey, Penner has yet to record a point. He’s also 1-1-1, if you want to use the scoreboard as a barometer – with the only win coming one year ago yesterday in Edmonton.

He’ll get two more cracks at his former team though, as the Kings are scheduled to face the Oilers tonight on the road and then again on Monday in Los Angeles. If you’d like to win tickets to that game at STAPLES Center, be sure to enter tonight’s First Goal Contest. It’s pretty easy, simply leave a comment below with the LA player you think will score first vs. the Oilers. All correct answers will be pooled together and one random winner will be awarded a free pair of tickets.

To help you with your selection, the following stats may come in handy…

– Dustin Brown has 12 goals in 26 career games vs Edmonton (including 7 goals in 13 games in EDM)

– Anze Kopitar has 6 goals in 20 games

– Justin Williams has 2 goals in 15 games (including the only Kings goal vs. the Oilers this season)

– Mike Richards has 0 goals in 7 games

– Jeff Carter has 4 goals in 5 games (out of the line-up tonight and tomorrow)

– Jarret Stoll has 4 goals in 11 games

– Doughty has 4 goal in 14 games

Of course, feel free to take any of the other Kings players. Just remember that Kevin Westgarth and Davis Drewiske are the likely scratches, with Richardson expected to take the place of an injured Carter.  So, for your reference – Richardson has potted three goals in 27 career contests vs. the Oilers.

Good luck!

Special note: After the game, I’ll be a guest on the Oilers post-game show airing on Team 1260 in Edmonton.  You can listen live by clicking here.

Hopefully, the boys will be able to match Edmonton’s speed tonight. Adding Richardson in to the line-up should help, however I’m not expecting any sort of offensive impact from him (numbers wise). We need to try and jump out with an early goal and keep the Oilers on their toes and in their own zone. I like our recent output of just putting the puck on net and activating the D throughout the entire game. Those two things, added to Quickie’s stellar play, have really helped. GKG!
