Locker Room Quotes: Kings def Islanders 3-0

December 8, 2013 By John Hoven

Paced by goals from Anze Kopitar and Dustin Brown, along with a shutout from Martin Jones in net, the Kings stopped the visiting New York Islanders 3-0 on Saturday night. They’ve now allowed two goals or less in 15 straight games (not counting shootout goals), which is a team record.

LA is also 8-2-2 in their last 12 home games and 10-1-4 in the last 15 games overall. After 30 games played this season, the Kings 19-7-4 record (42 points) is tied for the second best record in club history (1980-81 club was 21-7-2 = 44 pts, 1974-75 club was 16-4-10 = 42 pts).

Here’s what was being said in both locker rooms following the Kings-Islanders contest…

Coach Darryl Sutter on the play of all the goalies:

“I don’t think you win with one guy.”

Sutter on Martin Jones:

“I thought he was really solid. He had some big saves for us. He really held us in there the first period. I thought he was outstanding.”

Goalie Martin Jones on the overall game:

“It’s good. I mean anytime you win it’s a good feeling. It wasn’t a ton or work early, but they had some zonetime so I was able to get in the game. I thought we got better as the game went on.”

Jones on his teammates chanting his name as he re-entered the locker room:

“Yeah the guys have been awesome since I’ve been up here. It’s a great group of guys, and I am happy to be able to get a couple of wins for them.”

Jones on when he found out he was going to start the game:

“Late today. I had to prepare either way, and I was able to prepare for the start of the game.”

Kings captain Dustin Brown on getting ready for next week’s road trip:

“We got a practice tomorrow. Just got to get on the ice and loosen up. We got a long flight, and that’s the one thing with this road trip. We just have to prepare ourselves tonight and tomorrow. Cause the flight cross country and then playing back to back is not going to be easy. We just got to find a way to have a good start in Montreal.”

Brown on if the Islanders more than they expected:

“No I think we got a good taste of what their game was all about when we played them at the Island a few weeks ago. That’s the great thing about the schedule, you get to see each team twice now. Like I said, coming out we knew they can play the high power offense, especially those, they have a few dynamic players up front that you have to be really aware of.”

Islanders coach Jack Capuano on the overall game:

“To me, I know what our record is, it is what it is. It’s not like we’re getting dominated in these games. They scored on a one on four and they scored on a wrap around. If we’re not going to score any goals, it’s going to be tough for us.”

More from Capuano:

“Their top players were their top players tonight and that’s why they won a hockey game. Our guys need to shoot a little bit more. They have to get pucks to the net. I give them credit for working hard and battling hard, they’re going against the other team’s top guys on the road, we just have to get more pucks to the net.”

Islanders forward Kyle Okposo on the overall game:

“It was tough. It wasn’t an easy game to play in. Obviously they’re a really good hockey team for a reason. They all buy in and play the game the right way. They played their systems well tonight I thought and we just had a tough time.”

Okposo on team confidence:

“We played well for 30 minutes and then kind of shot ourselves in the foot a little bit but we were right in the game. At the end of the day we’ve got to find a way to win because this is unacceptable.”

Okposo on playing Anaheim next:

“It’s going to be a dog fight. They play similar to LA. They’re big, strong and they play well defensively. We’re going to have to find it in here. It’s in here. We just talked about it a little bit and we’re going to be better on Monday.”
