Willie Mitchell shared some post-game thoughts with MayorsManor following the Kings 3-2 win in Anaheim on Tuesday night…
Overall thoughts on the game and it coming in the second of a back-to-back set:
“I think we deserved it. I think we played the game we wanted to. It was a game we wanted, for the obvious reasons, because they’re ahead of us in the standings. When it goes to the shootout, it’s anyone’s game. Jonesy came in, cool as a cucumber in there, and did the job for us. We got a big goal from Kinger. A good win for us and it’s nice to have that when you’ve got three days off.”
On when they knew that Martin Jones was going to get the start in goal:
“Yesterday. I think that everyone kind of had a bit of an idea yesterday. I think that a few of the guys had a bit of an idea during the game yesterday. I think that Darryl made his decision during the game last night. I don’t know what triggered that, but I heard that rumor. It’s a rumor, but you have to find out if it’s true. He played great. He’s a big guy. He’s pretty good on his angles and just composed in there. He went tit for tat with Hiller in there tonight and gave us a chance in the shootout.”
On if he, as a veteran player, offered any advice to Martin Jones earlier in the day:
“Oh, no. Before the game I said, “enjoy, because it’s a long road to get here.” I just said, “just soak it all in and be yourself.” You’re really happy for someone like that because it’s pretty cool, the journey. You forget about that and you forget about it between periods. I think that when you’re young, I’m sure that you think about it before the game. When you’re older, you think about it because you know that the games going to end. I was just really happy for him.”
On if tonight felt like a bigger game than normal because of all the Stadium Series hype earlier in the day:
“It felt more like just another Kings/Ducks game. We know that they’ve been playing great hockey, one of the top teams in the league. Bottom line is that we were chasing them. They’re ahead of us, so that’s how we’re looking at it. We’ve always approached it that way. Division games are big games and we wanted to come out a play a good game off of back to backs. I think that, for the most part, we did that.”
