Shane Doan breaks down a double dose of the LA Kings

March 18, 2013 By John Hoven

Last hour we posted some Word Association with Phoenix captain Shane Doan. In the video below we do a more thorough one-on-one interview – talking about playing the Kings twice this week, turning the page from last year’s playoff series, the ongoing sale of the Coyotes, a new contract for Oliver Ekman-Larsson, keys to tonight’s game and more.

Interesting that he placed so much emphasis on penalties as being a key – if only because the Coyotes are 8-1-1 this season when they score first. So, you would think that might be the key to the game.

Regardless, we asked Coyotes coach Dave Tippett about Doan’s assessment…

“Well that’s a big key for us,” he said. “Discipline is a big part. There’s momentum swings in the game right now with them being so tight. Is a big factor in the games, and if you’re in the penalty box too much; you’re giving the other team a lot of momentum. So, we want to make sure we give ourselves the best chance to win. The more penalties you take, the less chance you have to win a hockey game. So staying out of the penalty box is a big factor for us.”

What about preparing for the same team on back-to-back nights, does that help at all?

“We look at situations like this – and we had one with three games against Anaheim – it’s almost like a little playoff mindset where you prepare for the team, and then you make certain adjustments,” said Tippett. “So you separate them each game, but you’re cognizant of tweaks you have to make in the way you play, or to special teams, face-offs, those kinds of things. The normal tweaks you would make in a playoff series.”

Tomorrow we’ll share some interesting words from Paul Bissonnette. He seems to have changed his tune a bit on young Kyle Clifford from a few seasons ago. Until then, be sure to check out some of the related articles linked below.
