Originally selected at the 2020 NHL Draft (third round) — with a pick the Kings acquired when they sent Kyle Clifford and Jack Campbell to Toronto several months prior — Laferriere went on to play in the USHL and for Harvard. While in college, he earned ECAC Rookie of the Year honors during his freshman season, recording 31 points (14G, 17A) enroute to an ECAC tournament championship.
Laferriere eventually turned pro in the spring of 2023 and then joined the Kings right out of training camp that October; playing 81 regular season games as am NHL rookie.
Over 77 games played last season, Laferriere’s plus-22 rating tied for second-best among team forwards. Additionally, his 124 hits and 43 blocked shots each placed third-most.
His versatility proved to be valuable for coach Jim Hiller, as well, who played him up and down the lineup on both sides as a winger. More so, Laferriere was even used at center on occasion. Where he might slot in this coming season was looked at in a previous article here.
Adrian Kempe Notes
Kempe’s current contract — a four-year deal carrying a very modest $5.5M cap hit — is set to expire next June. He would be an unrestricted free agent if things get that far. However, with the NHLPA and NHL recently agreeing to a new CBA, he will be the last Kings player eligible to sign an eight-year extension, should both parties agree to such a term.
Another of the Kings drafted and developed players, the 2014 first round pick first came to North America in 2015 and found instant success; helping the Manchester Monarchs win their only Calder Cup Championship.
Having already played 630 games in a Kings uniform, Kempe will pass Clifford and Mike Murphy next season to move into 12th all time on that list. Over the past four years, Kempe has averaged over 34 goals per season and is currently tied for 10th most in franchise history. His 194 goals match the totals of Murphy and Jeff Carter. He also sits just 28 goals back of Charlie Simmer and will tie Wayne Gretzky with another 52 goals scored.
Holland and Kempe are on record with wanting to get a long-term extension signed this summer. Training camp opens seven weeks.

Laffy
Mostly Happy as second favorite current player after Kempe whose contract is the real concern. If Laffy does real well his next salary will be double this a season otherwise will probably cost 5 or 6 per year next contract if its with LA anyway. He should score 20 to 30 goals to make it decent. its not CC money but more than Doumalin or so especially if pay per minute. Was waiting thinking might sign AK too not Kopitar again though heh. Only Captain to go over 11 years without getting into second round, even Norstrom was better wearing the C. Many seem to want to doom Kempe like anze giving him 10M per yer naming him Captain too. Mikey will likely be the next to wear the C failing to make playoffs or getting beyond 1st round. I hope he can score 35 goals but think his ceiling is 33 goals 60 points about depending on line mates.
I would grade contract like C+ as its going to probably cost more than could have over next 5 to 10 years. Also he is one of my favorite current players so is probably not as good as see him or give him a pass on flaws more then a person who wants to upgrade or sees him as a bottom 9 guy would. Like Chromiuak or so can be lost on waivers for nothing like Gabe Vilardi nearly was. So signing Perry is making me think will lose a player hoped would pan out. Though maybe the health issues derailed him more than anything.
