One way or another, the LA Kings are going to shine at The Garden on Sunday. Scheduled for an afternoon start, the Kings will wear their alternate jerseys and chrome helmets for the only ‘real’ road game this season (sure, they wore them in Anaheim, but does that even qualify as a road game anymore?).
Perhaps the bigger news heading into this East-West showdown is who coach Todd McLellan has elected to go with in net. Indications are, he’ll start Jonathan Quick vs. his childhood team, the Rangers. The logic is there too. Quick has won his last three starts and only faced 18 shots against the Islanders on Friday night in Long Island. If there was ever time to show some confidence in the 37-year-old goaltender, this is likely it.
When Quick and the Rangers are mentioned together, it obviously stirs up memories of his battles with Henrik Lundqvist over the 2014 Stanley Cup. In fact, Quick outdueled ‘King Henrik’ many a nights throughout his career and has put together a 7-5-1 lifetime record vs. the Rangers while sporting a cool .914 save percentage.
And before anybody asks — no, we don’t believe the Kings are showcasing Quick for a trade. He’s expected to finish this season with LA.
Now back to reality…
Although McLellan didn’t put the team through a pregame morning skate earlier today, no changes are expected to the lineup — one that is coming off a 3-2 win just a few nights ago.
