It’s that time of the year again – when the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) releases the results of their Coaches Poll. In the past, Kings’ players (then, just prospects) Drew Doughty and Tyler Toffoli were among the plethora of kids honored on the annual list. This year’s final tallies offered the following honors for a pair of players from the Los Angeles organization:
– Forward Spencer Watson, of the Kingston Frontenacs (2014 draft pick, 7th round), placed No. 3 in the Most Dangerous in Goal Area (Eastern Conference) category.
– Defenseman Kurtis MacDermid, of the Erie Otters (undrafted, free agent signing), placed No. 1 in the Best Body Checker and No. 3 in the Best Defensive Defenseman (Western Conference) categories.
A few other tidbits worth passing along:
– Defenseman Marcus McIvor, of the North Bay Battalion, an undrafted player who participated in the Kings 2013 summer Development Camp and Rookie Camp that September, took home several honors. He placed No. 1 in the Most Underrated Player, Best Penalty Killer, and Best Defensive Defenseman categories. He also snagged the No. 2 spot for Best Shot Blocker in the Eastern Conference.
– Also, keep in mind – some of the players on the 2014-15 Coaches Poll have not been drafted by an NHL team yet. Thus, after the Draft in June, we can revisit this list again to see if any of their new selections made the cut in a few categories.
