Monday practice report – chat with Drew Doughty 5/13/13

May 13, 2013 By John Hoven

Following the Kings’ one-hour practice on Monday morning, here’s what defenseman Drew Doughty had to share…

On if he still thinks about his first fight with Joe Thornton:

“No, I guess every time we play against them I’m reminded of it by other people, but I don’t see it happening during this playoff round.  Because I’d rather be out there than in the box.”

On if he’s been trading texts with friend Logan Couture:

“No, nothing.  I think we’re just gonna kind of give each other the cold shoulder until the series is over.  And then, we’re obviously buddies off the ice, but play for the second round.  Tomorrow it’s going to be a battle.”

On how close he watched the Ducks/Wings game last night:

“We watched the whole thing.  We actually had a few of the guys together, and we all watched the game.  (They came to your place?)  No, no they aren’t coming to my place.  My place is too messy.  But yeah we watched the game pretty close.  Didn’t really care who won, but happy we’re playing San Jose I guess.”

On if he was surprised at Anaheim coming out flat in a Game 7:

“Yeah, little bit.  To be honest though even from the get-go, I kind of thought that Detroit had a good chance at the upset.  That was my one series that I thought if there was going to be an upset; that would be the one.  I was surprised that Anaheim didn’t have more fire, especially in that first period.”

On the most important aspect of his game that he needs to work on in order to have playoff success:

“I just need to play solid defense.  They want me to be a tough defenseman to play against.  I feel I’ve gotten a lot better at that.  Be good in my own zone.  Play physical.  You know I don’t want forwards wanting to come down on me, wanting to play against me.  I want them to be not afraid of me, but wanna be a guy that they don’t want to play down low against.  So been working on that, and then obviously gotta keep with the offense too.”
