VIDEO: Penner feeling the energy with Kings opening camp as champs

January 13, 2013 By John Hoven

In the days leading up to Kings training camp kicking off, Dustin Penner was his usual jovial self, sharing several good chirps with MayorsManor – such as:

– On Mike Richards coming to LA mid-week to join his teammates in pre-camp skates – “He answered the bell. I told him to get down here last night. So, I guess he jumped on a red-eye.”

– On it being strange to think that Richards would listen to Penner after he was giving him a hard time on twitter a few days earlier – “You gotta bully people into getting what you want out of them. That’s good advice right?”

– On who will get more heat for their conditioning as camp kicks off, him or Doughty – “Well I’m going to give it to Drew more than anyone and I’m sure he’ll do the same to me.”

– On Alec Martinez post-surgery – “He looks fine, looks like a couple of flesh wounds – but, nothing that looks like it will be affecting him past the original healing date.”

– On when he’ll start chirping Martinez about taking a puck to the face and getting metal plates installed – “I already have. I can’t divulge (what I said though). It’s locker room talk and isn’t PC.”

He also shared his overall view of coming into camp this year as Stanley Cup Champions and as a group that’s had to wait seven months to get back together again.

“I think the first day of training camp, you know that nervous energy, that good anxiety that you get seeing Daryl and Dean,” Penner said, describing what he was looking forward to the most. “To my knowledge, that only comes from the pressure of playing professional sports. You have that camaraderie and I guess a bit of the hoopla from winning it last year. So, it’s going to be a fun time to be around.”

After the Kings first official post-lockout practice, we caught up with Penner again to talk about the fresh news of Kevin Westgarth being traded, the team’s ipod  and a few other topics…
