Among all the hope and excitement at today’s opening of LA Kings training camp, hanging thick in the air though was the fact that two of their best players weren’t on the ice. Defenseman Willie Mitchell is expected to be out for several weeks and wasn’t even seen at the training facility. On the other hand, center Anze Kopitar – who’ nursing a knee injury that is expected to sideline him for another few weeks – was made available to the media for questions.
Kopitar talked about the injury (both how it happened and what’s next), playing with Bobby Ryan of the Anaheim Ducks, heading into the season as defending Stanley Cup Champions, his younger brother Gasper, life on the road in Sweden and much more…

Finally, without Kopitar on the ice, the Kings went with the following line combinations at forward today:
Dustin Penner – Jeff Carter – Justin Williams
Simon Gagne – Mike Richards – Dustin Brown
Dwight King – Jarret Stoll – Trevor Lewis
Kyle Clifford – Colin Fraser – Jordan Nolan
Interestingly, those are the same line combos we tweeted out five days ago and wrote about in an article here a few days ago. Guess great minds think alike. Well, either that or Darryl Sutter reads our tweets.
