SCOUTING REPORTS
From Elite Prospects:
Positioning well away from the puck, rotating with the play, and showing the necessary urgency when closing on puck carriers, Vandenberg looks like a plus-level defensive forward at the professional level. He slips between opponents and the puck on the wall, knocks them off balance, and takes the puck to the net himself…While he can carry the puck and slip it to teammates under sticks occasionally, Vandenberg remains his best away from the puck offensively, too, finding space to set up an NHL-calibre shot. His releases fly past goalies directly off the pass.
From McKeen’s:
What makes Vandenberg such an appealing draft prospect is that his game is already so refined. This is especially impressive given that Vandenberg is one of the youngest players eligible this year. He is a very good defensive forward; his reads are terrific and he has a very active stick. He is relentless in puck pursuit, looking to use his speed to hunt down opportunities
to earn touches. He flashes a physical game, which could take his game to another level if it can find a way to be more consistent as he matures physically. At the very least, Vandenberg looks like a future checking line option and penalty killer. However, Vandenberg also possesses an intriguing offensive skill set. He owns a big shot, and he is great at hunting down scoring opportunities, understanding how to play without the puck to find soft spots in coverage. As mentioned,
his skating ability is a major asset as he routinely creates odd man opportunities with his explosiveness, blowing past defenders at the blueline and in the neutral zone.
