There’s just something about the Colorado Eagles and their ability to seemingly always find a way to one-up the Reign. After bouncing Ontario from the playoffs three years running, Colorado began the 2023-24 season series between the two clubs with a pair of victories over Marco Sturm’s club. Then, in the two most recent games, the Reign have bounced back with their own pair of wins. Yet, the season series isn’t actually tied in points due to the last game being a 5-4 decided via a shootout.
Rookie goaltender Erik Portillo was in net for that one and he’s expected to get the nod again tonight. Earlier this season, Portillo also faced the Eagles in Colorado, stopping 33-of-38 shots in a 5-3 loss.
Kings prospects Sammy Helenius and Akil Thomas each had a goal the last time these two clubs met up for the aforementioned shootout win by Ontario. Both players also found the back of the net in Tucson over the weekend. Thomas has been especially hot of late, racking up 13 points (6G, 7A) in his last 11 games.
As noted in Saturday’s Reign Recap, the team’s power play is clicking right now:
Power Play Specialists: Coach Sturm and his staff have the Reign firing on all cylinders with the man-advantage. They have scored in nine of the past 11 games on the power play, and boast 12 power play goals over that stretch. Their weekend in Tucson was no exception, going 4-for-9 in a two-game set against the eighth best penalty kill in the league.
With Alex Turcotte and Sammy Fagemo still up with the Kings, Sturm will go with the same 12 forwards used over the weekend. In related roster news, defenseman Jacob Moverare stayed on the ice for additional work after today’s morning skate but was not wearing a red jersey — which usually an indication he’s getting close to a return soon.
