Ontario Reign Lineup at Calgary Wranglers; Plus an Updated Turcotte Timeline

January 11, 2024 By Scott Coffman

Coming off three straight wins, Ontario picked a fine time to heat up a bit. On Thursday, they’ll open a back-to-back set with the Calgary Wranglers, who just so happen to be atop the Pacific Division and one of the AHL’s best teams.

The Reign are also within striking distance, sitting just three points behind them in the standings (and having played the same number of games on the season).

In even more optimistic news, the two clubs split a pair of games played in Ontario back in November. However, the Reign actually came out of that series with three points, as they lost the first game via a shootout. In a rematch two nights later, the Reign skated to a 4-0 shutout by rookie goalie Erik Portillo. He’s expected back between the pipes again tonight.

Sammy Fagemo had two goals in the latter contest, as well. Despite closing in on the AHL lead in goals, the Swedish forward was not selected to play in the league’s upcoming All-Star Game.

Kings prospect Alex Turcotte continues to skate, as he is recovering from a lower-body injury. From what we understand, he isn’t expected to draw in tonight or tomorrow. Yet, the team is penciling in his return next week vs. Abbotsford.

Of course, coach Marco Sturm has pulled a surprise or two before. So, perhaps the young forward draws in earlier than expected.

At least one change could be in the making tonight up front. Last time out, Sturm opted to rest Jacob Doty in favor of Ryan Francis. It was said to be a healthy scratch, so perhaps the big man is inserted back into his usual spot at RW4 tonight.

ICYMI – we posted a feature story on Akil Thomas earlier this week. It’s linked below for your reference. There are some great quotes in there from both Thomas and Sturm.

As for the goalie situation, the Reign continue to carry three netminders for now. Veteran Aaron Dell has joined the team and is said to be skating. There is no timetable yet for if/when he may start a game.
