LA Kings Prospect Tracker: Week Ending January 28, 2024

January 28, 2024 By MayorsManor Staff

The following reports are from games played through end of day Sunday, January 28th.

ONTARIO REIGN (AHL)

Due to the Ontario Reign featuring a large volume of LA Kings prospects this season, each tracker will feature a select number of them on a rotating basis – largely culled from key performances for the prior week.

Reign Recap: 3-Game Slide Snapped on Chromiak Hat Trick and Portillo’s 41 Saves

Reign Report: Akil Thomas Remains Hot in Ontario’s 5-4 Loss at Tucson

Martin Chromiak, Forward (128th overall in 2020)

2023-2024 Stats: 11 goals, 9 assists, minus-2, 22 PIM in 40 games played

Chromiak ended his dry spell with a hat-trick that propelled the Reign past the Roadrunners on Friday, scoring all of his goals from the left side of the ice. He would cap that performance off with an assist, netting himself First Star of the Game with a four-point output.

Samuel Helenius, Center (59th overall in 2021)

2023-2024 Stats: 7 goals, 4 assists, plus-2, 40 PIM in 39 games played

The 6-foot-6 pivot gave the Roadrunners a run for their money in the final five minutes on Saturday, scoring twice in under a minute to pull the Reign within one. Acting as the screen, he would use his reach to bang an escaping rebound in for his first of the night. Cruising through the high slot about 40 seconds later, he tipped in a point shot for his second goal. Entering the campaign with just three career AHL goals, his seven this season have far exceeded that.

Akil Thomas, Forward (51st overall in 2018)

2023-2024 Stats: 15 goals, 15 assists, plus-1, 30 PIM in 41 games played

Thomas remained red-hot this week and was a play driver in both contests at Tucson. Already having an assist in the first match, he scored the eventual game-winner off a 2-on-1 tap-in, setup after Alex Turcotte patiently outwaited a sliding defender. He would later add a beautiful no-look assist on the last goal. Thomas followed that three-point performance by smacking home a rebound in the rematch on Saturday, sparking a pushback by the Reign.

With Thomas' goal and assist tonight, he has 24 points in the past 25 games.

Erik Portillo, Goalie (Acquired via trade with BUF)

2023-2024 Stats: 2.45 GAA, .923 SV%, 2 SO, and 12 wins in 20 games played

Portillo’s single start of the week was one of his campaign’s best, turning away 41-of-42 shots for his 12th win of the season. Outdone only by Chromiak, the Swede would be given Second Star of the Game, rightfully deserved considering the Reign were outshot 42-27.

OHL (Junior Hockey)

Kaleb Lawrence, London Knights, Right Wing (215th overall in 2022)

2023-2024 Stats
London Knights: 2 goals, 3 assists, Plus-3, 11 PIM in 7 games played
Ottawa 67’s: 10 goals, 8 assists, plus-1, 2 PIM in 30 games played

London would fall twice this week, dropping both games in the shootout. Lawrence provided seven high-danger shots and won 60% of his faceoffs, while being a minus-2 as the team’s third-line pivot.

Matthew Mania, Sudbury Wolves, Defenseman (150th overall in 2023)

2023-2024 Stats: 3 goals, 13 assists, plus-7, 16 PIM in 24 games played

Sudbury picked up a pair of wins over North Bay by scores of 5-4 in regulation and 5-4 in overtime. Mania was a minus-3 in the first game and then ejected for a fighting major in the following contest.

QMJHL (Junior Hockey)

Angus Booth, Baie-Comeau Drakkar, LH Defensemen (116th overall in 2022)

2023-2024 Stats
Baie-Comeau Drakkar: 0 goals, 2 assists, plus-10, 11 PIM in 9 games played
Shawinigan Cataractes: 2 goals, 13 assists, plus-6, 26 PIM in 31 games played

Booth received a one-game suspension after being ejected for high sticking midway through the second period of a game against the Saguenéens. Drakkar would go on to lose that game 5-1. He then sat out a 4-1 Drakkar victory and is now eligible to return in their next game.

Sounds like Angus Booth cross checked someone in the face twice. #LAKings https://t.co/OXOIWw9qiU

WHL (Junior Hockey)

Koehn Ziemmer, Prince George Cougars, Right Wing (78th overall in 2023)

2023-2024 Stats: 11 goals, 20 assists, plus-15, 23 PIM in 20 games played

Still injured. No reported timeline for his return.

Jakub Dvorak, Swift Current Broncos, LH Defenseman (54th overall in 2023)

2023-2024 Stats
WHL-Swift Current: 0 goals, 2 assists, plus-4, 2 PIM in 7 games played
Czechia-Bili Tygri Liberec: 2 goals, 1 assist, plus-5, 20 PIM in 19 games played
Czechia U20-Bili Tygri Liberec: 1 goal, 1 assist, plus-4, 2 PIM in 3 games played

Dvorak helped the Broncos get at least a point in their 3-2 OT loss to the Blades with a primary assist on the late game-tying goal.

That gives him 2 helpers in 7 games since joining the WHL. https://t.co/i5O7AXiMOz

USHL

Hampton Slukynsky, Fargo Force, Goalie (118th overall in 2023)

2023-2024 Stats: 1.75 GAA, .920 SV%, 3 SO,16 wins, and 1 assist in 19 games played

The USHL’s top netminder rebounded from his first loss of the season last weekend with a win over the Waterloo Blackhawks. He stopped 21-of-24 shots, including stoning the opposition on a breakaway to keep the game tied going into the third period. ‘Hammer’ was also credited with the primary assist on his team’s empty-net goal.

BCHL

Jack Sparkes, Chilliwack Chiefs, RH Defenseman (180th overall in 2022)

2022-2023 Stats
BCHL-Chilliwack: 1 goal, 4 assists, and 56 penalty minutes in 15 games played
USHL-Muskegon: 1 goal, 2 assists, plus-4, 23 PIM in 14 games played

Chilliwack thundered out from the BCHL All-Star break with three straight victories, winning by a conjoined tally of 10-4. Assigned to the team’s third defensive pair, Sparkes collected four penalty minutes, putting the 6-foot-8 bruiser on pace to finish the season with 127 PIM in 34 games.

COLLEGE HOCKEY (NCAA)

Ryan Conmy, Univ. of New Hampshire, Right Wing (182nd overall in 2023)

2023-2024 Stats: 12 goals, 12 assists, plus-9, 8 PIM in 22 games played

The Wildcats would roar back from a 2-1 defeat by Vermont Univ. on Friday to beat them 6-3 on Saturday. Scoring on the powerplay in the second game, Conmy carried the puck into the zone and cashed in five-hole after fanning on his first shot. He recorded seven SOG and was a minus-1 this weekend.

Kenny Connors, UMass., Center (103rd overall in 2022)

2023-2024 Stats: 5 goals, 8 assists, minus-1, 8 PIM in 22 games played

The Minutemen had a bye week and will return to action on February 2nd against Merrimack.

Jack Hughes, Boston Univ., Center (51st overall in 2022)

2023-2024 Stats: 4 goals, 4 assists, plus-2, 8 PIM in 21 games played

The No.1 ranked Terriers walked away bruised and bloodied in the Battle of Boston after losing twice to No.2 ranked Boston College by a total outcome of 8-4. Shifting over to the left wing, Hughes was promoted to the second line and immediately made a difference. He sent a top-shelf snipe into the net’s right corner from the left dot to start a Terrier comeback in the first game. Then, in the next match, he again climbed the lineup, this time to ride shotgun on the top line with projected first-overall NHL draft pick Macklin Celebrini.

Jared Wright, Denver Univ., Forward (169th overall in 2022)

2023-2024 Stats: 7 goals, 5 assists, minus-1, 6 PIM in 26 games played

The Denver Pioneers failed to defend their No.4 spot in the NCAA rankings with successive losses to No.5 ranked North Dakota, losing by a combined score of 9-4. Wright opened up the scoring in the second game after hammering home his own rebound created on a breakaway. He was a plus-1, with three SOG this week while playing on the second line.

Braden Doyle, Northeastern Univ., LH Defenseman (157th overall in 2019)

2023-2024 Stats: 1 goal, 0 assists, minus-2, 0 PIM in 12 games played

Doyle did not skate in Northeastern’s dual wins over Merrimack Univ. this weekend.

Ben Meehan, UMass-Lowell, LH Defenseman (140th overall in 2020)

2023-2024 Stats: 1 goal, 8 assists, minus-1, 14 PIM in 15 games played

The River Hawks slide continued with consecutive losses to Providence Univ., bringing their winless streak to four. One of the few bright spots in their opening 7-2 loss, Meehan recorded his first goal of the season with a one-timer from the right dot. The ‘Hawks would save a bit more face the next game by losing 4-3 in OT, in which Meehan added a secondary helper to his stat line. Despite the onslaught, Meehan was only a minus-3 for the weekend.

The Pelicans 2-1 losses to Assat and JYP sandwiched their only win of the week, a 4-0 shutout of HPK, in which Jamsen picked up an assist. Averaging 19:41 in TOI against HPK and JYP, the lanky Finn was credited with eight SOG. He did not play in the match against Assat.

Kasper Simontaival, LIIGA-KalPa, Center (66th overall in 2020)

2023-2024 Stats: 12 goals, 13 assists, plus-4, 12 PIM in 38 games played

KalPa continued their decline this week, dropping all three of their games by a combined score of 11-4. Simontaival’s lone point would come in a 4-2 loss to Jukurit. He walked the puck out of the corner and hit a teammate in the slot with a clean pass for a primary assist. Averaging a little under 15 minutes in TOI across those three games, the 5-foot-9 winger would start the week on the team’s first line before later being dropped to the third line in the remaining games, registering 12 SOG in total.

Mestis- Kiekko-Vantaa: 1 goal, 0 assists, plus-1, 0 PIM in 1 game played
World Juniors U20: 0 goals, 1 assist, minus-2, 2 PIM in 7 games played

Salin resolved the lull in his season after having his contract with HIFK terminated by signing a pro-rated two-year deal with TPS Turku. In his maiden game, Salin snagged a point after finding a teammate tearing through the neutral zone for a primary assist in a 4-3 loss to Karpat. Skating on the second defensive pairing, he logged 18:35 in TOI and had two SOG.
