We know you’re busy, so let’s help catch you up on some of the Kings news, notes, and nonsense that perhaps was missed over the past few days. Using our popular 10 Tidbits format, here’s all the latest info you need to know, not only about LA, but the hockey world as a whole:
1. From U2 to the NHL
Be on the lookout for some updates this week on the 2024 NHL Draft location. Rumors suggest it will be in Vegas at the Sphere.
With the NHL Board of Governors meeting in Seattle this week, waiting for more details re: June 2024. Lots of chatter about holding the Draft at the Sphere in Vegas (having just been there, gets my vote).
I'm also expecting the NHL Awards to be held at Peacock Theater in LA.

News will probably start to leak out following this week’s Board of Governors Meetings being held in Seattle (it’s a topic for discussion on Tuesday’s BOG agenda). Things kicked off today on the fifth ‘birthday’ of the Kraken franchise.
Happy Birthday to the @SeattleKraken?

Fun fact — that BOG Meeting in Georgia was held at a famous hotel owned by Phil Anschutz. The current BOG meeting is being held in Seattle as part of an agreement that was hatched during the original expansion conversations that eventually brought the team to light.
2. Fantasy Hockey
Another feature event put on by the league will be coming up at the end of January and they’re taking things old school. The NHL recently announced they’re bringing back the fantasy-style draft for players at the All Star Game. Circle your calendars for Feb. 1, 2024.
From the Did You Know Dept…
Did you know, Kings GM Rob Blake actually helped create the idea for the All Star Weekend Fantasy Draft? Back in 2011, he and Brendan Shanahan were working for the NHL, and they suggested it when asked for ways to spice up the league’s mid-year event.
As timing would have it, Columbus was originally scheduled to host the All Star Game in 2013. However, a lockout that season forced it to be moved two years (note: there wasn’t an ASG in 2014 because of the Winter Olympics).
When the game finally took place in 2015, the Fantasy Draft was finally set to make its debut. This was also Dustin Penner’s first year of retirement, so he joined us on Mayor’s Manor to have some fun. MM editor John Hoven and Penner ‘captained’ their own teams using players selected to the game that year. There was a scoring system used to determine a winner. In true Penner form, the article below was filled with a bevy of classic one-liners from the always quotable winger.
3. Brotherly Love
This just might be the greatest clip of a hockey referee announcing penalties, ever:
It came from a recent game involving Ottawa and Florida. Well done, Tkachuk brothers. Well done, indeed.
Boy, the Senators have fallen on hard times this season.

4. Pretty, Pretty Good
That Adrian Kempe guy is pretty good.
A closer look at the NHL EDGE data through Sunday shows 11 players ranked among the top 10% in the League in both 20+ mph skating bursts and 80+ mph shot speeds.

5. Fox to the Rescue
A few of the Kings goals in their 4-1 victory over the Avs were missed by those watching on TV last night. Jim Fox offered this explanation when asked about the situation:
It should never happen…but…on tonight's play…a recent rule went into effect…puck shot on goal from outside the center line and held by goalie…it is treated like an icing…no break and goalie's team cannot make changes…we did not pick up in it quick enough that there… https://t.co/msLTyDr1sq

6. Stats Galore
During Sunday’s Kings-Avs game, LA outshot Colorado 23-5 in the third period. Per stats guru Blake Warye, that is the most shots on goal produced by a Kings team in a single period since the 2021-22 season. They put up 27 shots (!) during the first period of a game against Detroit that year.
LA’s +18 SOG in the third period last night was also the largest shot differential in a third period by any team this season.
In fairness, the Kings were playing their first game in what felt like a month, while the Avs were on their third game in four nights. But, still.
Quinton Byfield and Trevor Moore scored in that game. They’re part of what could be a record setting group of Kings who are on pace for 20-goal seasons:
The most 20-goal scorers the Kings have had in one season is 8 (1990-91): Bob Kudelski, Dave Taylor, Luc Robitaille, Steve Duchesne, Todd Elik, Tomas Sandstrom, Tony Granato, and Wayne Gretzky. pic.twitter.com/DLqzFdiiAY

7. Now Hiring
Staying in the Pacific Division, former Ducks head coach Dallas Eakins has hooked on with Mannheim in the DEL as GM and Coach. It’s sort of a trial run through the end of this season and then both sides will reassess where things stand. Current standings have Eakins’ Eagles sitting in 10th place, 13 points back of league leading (and AEG-owned) Eisbaren Berlin. On Sunday, Berlin defeated Manheim 3-1. Former Kings prospect Linden Vey is in his first season with Mannheim after playing in the KHL for the past six seasons.

8. Hammer Time
Speaking of current Kings prospects, 2023 draftee Hampton Slukynsky just continues to tear up the USHL. He was their Player of the Week after back-to-back shutouts.
9. Injury Report
Another Kings prospect and fellow 2023 draftee Koehn Ziemmer fell after a fight in the WHL, he’s now out long-term. This cost him any hope of playing for Team Canada at the upcoming World Junior Championship.

10. And Finally…
With the Kings set to begin a four-game road trip through Columbus, Montreal, and New York, let’s take a quick peek at something cool the Rangers did recently. In honor of legendary rock band KISS playing their final shows at Madison Square Garden last week, the Rangers put together some colab merch that was only available in the Big Apple:
