Only in the American Hockey League.
It’s a phrase that used to be much more common back in the day, especially when three games in three nights were common practice. However, as the AHL has taken on greater significance in the development process for NHL prospects in recent years, the two leagues have become more and more similar.
Just don’t use this weekend as a case in point.
Coach Marco Sturm and the Reign Have traveled north to face the San Jose Barracuda tonight. Then, the two clubs will rematch on Saturday afternoon at 2pm. It will be a pretty quick turnaround for all involved.
There’s also going to be some roster shuffling going on.
Coming off recent wins over three top Western Conference teams (Calgary, Colorado, and Coachella Valley), we’ll assume Sturm would prefer to keep his lineup together. Unfortunately, that’s not how things work in the AHL.
For starters, defenseman Jacob Moverare is up with the Kings and Toby Bjornfot has been placed on IR, so neither of those guys are available. In response, the Reign have recalled Tyler Inamoto and Wyatte Wylie from ECHL Greenville.
Up front, Sturm may choose to tweak something on the margins, yet all of the Kings prospects are expected to play.
In goal, things could go either way. However, Ontario GM Rich Seeley was on Kings Of The Podcast a few days ago and talked about the plan with Erik Portillo here:
ONTARIO REIGN PROJECTED LINEUP vs. SAN JOSE BARRACUDA

Puck drop is scheduled for 7pm Pacific Time and the game can be viewed on AHL TV.
