Ontario finished the weekend with a 2-1 loss against Colorado, despite a late comeback attempt.
The Reign were in dire need of a goal to tie things up, however they ran into a hot goaltender in Colorado’s Keith Kinkaid. He stopped 27 of 28 shots and was simply excellent in the final moments of regulation, up against a Reign team making one final push.
After killing a penalty of their own in the first period, Ontario went to work on the power play and Lias Andersson snuck one in on a wrap-around opportunity to go up 1-0 on the scoreboard. Goaltender Cal Petersen was equally superb in the opening period, stopping all 11 shots that he faced.
Ontario’s special teams were not up to par in the second period, as they did not convert on either power play opportunity. Conversely, the Reign penalty kill allowed Colorado to even the score at 1-1 while having a man-advantage.
The third period saw a bit of reversal, as Ontario’s PK came through with a big kill early in the final frame. However, moments later the Eagles struck for their second goal on the power play to earn a 2-1 lead. As the period dwindled down, the Reign had multiple opportunities to tie the game — including a shot off the post and a 6-on-4 power play — yet they were unable to tie it up.
Kings prospect Alex Laferriere has yet to register a point through two games; although he has looked pretty good, moving his feet and making plays at both ends of the ice.
Petersen ended up making 23 saves on 25 shots.
It was Ontario’s third straight loss at home this week, a stretch that saw them outscored 10-3 over that trio of games.
