When it rains it pours, and just like it has been in Southern California, it’s been pouring non-stop for the Reign as they lost their ninth consecutive game with a 5-2 loss against the Abbortsford Canucks.
Despite a really solid opening period that saw the Reign outshoot the Canucks 12-5, they had no goals to show for it. Ontario missed out on a power play opportunity, and Andre Lee had one of the better looks in the period with a chance in the slot, yet he failed to capitalize.
In the second period, the Reign finished killing off a penalty to Martin Chromiak, however Matt Alfaro scored shortly after the end of the penalty and the Canucks took a 1-0 lead. Abbotsford would follow that up with another goal from Linus Karlsson off of a 2-on-1 rush extending their lead. At the halfway point of the second period, Lias Andersson fired the puck into the net, and after a quick video review, the goal counted and Ontario was within one. In the final minute of the period, the Canucks scored a backbreaking goal as Arshdeep Bains added a shorthanded marker. Ontario outshot Abbotsford 21-7 in the second, yet were outscored 3-1.
The third period was not kind to Ontario either, as Abbotsford executed on a pair of odd man rushes to go up by four goals. Later in the period, Andersson scored his second of the night with a deflection on the power play.
Cal Petersen made 19 saves on 24 shots, as his losing streak reached eight games, and now has a 13-14-4 record in the AHL this season.
