Not all 10s are perfect.
With a 4-1 loss in Tucson on Tuesday night, the Ontario Reign not only fell short in the first of back-to-back games, they’ve also now gone 10 straight games without a victory.
Ontario’s offense had chances in this game, however the execution was nowhere to be found, resulting in another loss.
Coach Marco Sturm was likely frustrated throughout the first period, as the Roadrunners forced his club to spend a lot of time in their defensive zone and they coughed up the puck many times. The Reign were at their best late in the period, thanks to an effective forecheck. Cal Petersen had himself a nice period including a diving save to keep the game scoreless at the end of the opening stanza.
Tucson broke the scoreless tie in the early moments of the second period after Josh Doan, son of Shane Doan, recorded his first AHL goal. At the halfway mark of the game, Kings prospect Toby Bjornfot netted his fourth of the season to even the score. However, Tucson would answer with a pair of goals before the middle period came to a close to take a 3-1 lead into the final frame.
Ontario came out flying in the third period, generating some good chances, yet they were unable to execute. Later in the period the Reign had an opportunity to pull within one on the man advantage, but once again they could not find the back of the net. Tucson would add an empty netter in the final minute of regulation to seal the Reign’s fate.
Petersen made 30 saves on 33 shots in Tuesday’s loss. The two teams will face off again in Tucson on Wednesday night.
