Dropping the first of two weekend games wasn’t exactly what the Ontario Reign were hoping for on Friday night. However, a 2-0 shutout to the visiting Calgary Wranglers means they’ve now gone six straight contests without a victory.
On a more positive note, coach Marco Sturm’s offense was able to generate many offensive looks, as they outshot Calgary 34-22. They just weren’t able to sneak one past the Wrangler netminder. Additionally, the absence of Jordan Spence from Ontario’s lineup was noticeable, especially when they struggled to convert on any of their man-advantage opportunities.
Despite an overall well played opening period by the Reign, where they were doing a lot of good things, they trailed heading into first intermission after giving up a late goal to Calgary. It was a shot that simply found its way through traffic in front of the net.
In the second period, no one was able to find the back of the net. Despite outshooting the Wranglers 11-6, the Reign didn’t really have many high-end scoring opportunities and most of the saves needed were not very difficult.
Calgary extended their lead to 2-0 with a power play goal after T.J. Tynan took an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty early in the final period. Ontario would go on to have three chances with the man-advantage, including a full two-minute look at 5-on-3, but were unable to score. As a result, the Reign lost game one of the weekend set.
Cal Petersen made 20 saves on 22 shots in Friday’s loss. The 28-year-old netminder has now lost his last six games, dating back to a win over Coachella on February 20.
Meanwhile, Wranglers goalie Dustin Wolf is 6-0-1 against Ontario this season.
