For the second time in three days, the Ontario Reign fell short to the Calgary Wranglers on Sunday, this time by a 4-3 score.
Ontario had themselves a very strong start to the game, as they led 2-0 after the first period and 2-1 at the end of the second. However, three third period goals by Calgary led the visiting Wranglers to a win.
In the first period, Martin Chromiak opened the scoring with a power play goal, snapping one past the Wrangler goaltender to put Ontario ahead. Just 62 seconds later, Toby Bjornfot extended the Reign’s lead to a pair after his shot deflected off of a Calgary stick, up and over the Wrangler netminder, off the crossbar and in the net.
Calgary made it a one goal game in the first few minutes of the second stanza after Yan Kuznetsov cashed in on an Ontario turnover. No one else was able to find the back of the net for the remainder of the period, yet you could feel a change of momentum in the Wranglers favor with the game heading into the final frame.
In the third period, Calgary’s newfound momentum continued when they notched three straight unanswered goals to take a 4-2 lead. The Reign did not go without a fight, though, as Tyler Madden cut the Wranglers lead to one with just under two minutes to play in regulation. Despite a hard effort in the final minute, Ontario ended up on the losing side.
In net, Matthew Villalta made 26 saves on 30 shots and was tagged with the loss.
Including Sunday’s loss, Ontario ended their season series with Calgary holding a disappointing 1-7 record.
