Projected Lineups – LA Kings vs. Washington Capitals; Another New Player Mixed In

March 6, 2023 By Scott Coffman

For the only time this season — at least in the regular season — the Capitals arrive in Downtown LA tonight to faceoff with the Kings.

On March 23, 1994, Wayne Gretzky passed Gordie Howe to become the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer with 802 goals. It was a record many thought would never be broken. Then, this past December, Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin scored goal 802 to hit the mark, as well. He currently sits at 815 and is hunting down Gretzky’s record of 894 goals.

More recently, Washington has only won three of their last 10 games; the complete inverse of coach Todd McLellan’s squad, who are 7-2-1 in that same stretch.

Back in late October, the Caps defeated the Kings 4-3. In that game, Sean Durzi, Viktor Arvidsson, and Phil Danault had goals for LA. Jonathan Quick was the starting goaltender, so there will at least be one change there. After Joonas Korpisalo played on Saturday, McLellan is expected to go with Pheonix Copley tonight. He tended goal for the Caps for a few years, appearing in 27 games during the 2018-19 season.

Up front, LA’s bench boss has several decisions to make — including when to insert Trevor Moore (injured) and Zack MacEwen (recently acquired) into the lineup.

Zack MacEwen will make his LAK debut tonight v WAS. Which forward comes out is TBD – determined after warmup.

Key Game Info

Puck drop is set for 7:30 pm PST and will be televised by Bally Sports.

For those live in attendance, the LA Kings Booster Club will offer their popular ‘Puck for a Buck’ contest — featuring Blake Lizotte for this game. Just $1 could win you an autographed puck from an NHL star. Visit their table near aisle M8 on the main concourse for more information.

Across the Ice

As noted above, Washington hasn’t had a good 10-game run. Yet, they have won two consecutive games, and three of their last four. Tonight will mark the end of a four-game road trip.

In their last game played, the Capitals downed the Sharks 8-3 in San Jose on Saturday.

Here’s how they lined up for that one:
