Samuel Fagemo did it again. The 22-year-old NHL prospect provided some shootout heroics on Monday, helping the Ontario Reign pick up a 3-2 victory at Coachella Valley.
In the fourth round of the shootout, Fagemo wristed one into the top right corner of the net to win the game, and goaltender Cal Petersen shut down all four shootout tries by the host Firebirds.
Halfway through the first frame, Ontario broke the ice on the power play. After an initial shot by Aidan Dudas snuck past the Firebird netminder, Taylor Ward got a stick on it before it crossed the line. Following a Reign turnover, the Firebirds scored a power play goal of their own to tie it at one.
In the second stanza, Dudas gave Ontario the lead back after a nifty short handed goal on a breakaway. Although the Reign were held in their own zone for a good amount of the period, they killed off four penalties, and Petersen was huge in the period making 13 stops.
Within the first two minutes of the final frame, Coachella tied the game at a pair after they took advantage of another Ontario turnover. The 28-year-old, Petersen, was lights out, keeping Ontario in the game as they held off Coachella’s pressure to push the game into overtime.
The overtime period was filled with offensive chances for both sides, however after a scoreless frame, they were headed to a shootout.
After seven shooters failed to score, Fagemo was the hero once again as he ripped one into the upper corner of the net to win the game.
Petersen was the best player on the ice for the Reign Monday, as he came up big in key moments and made 36 saves.
