Ontario finished off their weekend with a 2-1 overtime loss to San Diego, just their second defeat by the Gulls in eight games this season.
San Diego broke the ice early, as a shot from the right point by Drew Helleson found its way past goalie Cal Petersen. Ontario thought they had scored late in the period, however it was ruled no goal due to a hand pass. Overall, the Reign were not able to generate many high-end chances in the first period.
In the second period, Petersen had to come up big in order to keep the score the same. Petersen made some big saves early, including when he sprawled across the crease to make a diving stop. There were no goals in the second period; however, Ontario was at their best in the final minutes of the period.
That momentum carried into the third, as the Reign started the final period on the power play. Just over a minute in, Samuel Fagemo blasted a one-time shot from the left circle to convert on the man-advantage. Ontario commanded most of the play in the back half of the period, yet the game remained tied and needed overtime.
Only 1:09 into the extra frame was all that was needed to find a winner, as Rocco Grimaldi scored on a breakaway after Lias Andersson lost his footing in the offensive end.
Overall, Petersen had a very strong outing making 28 saves in the loss.
