In the NHL’s last game played before a league-wide shutdown for the annual All Star break, things fell completely apart for the Kings with only 20 minutes of regulation play remaining. Up 4-1 after two periods of play — buoyed by a pair of goals from Adrian Kempe and three points from Anze Kopitar (1G, 2A) — it appeared the Kings were in a great position for a fourth victory in the finale of a six-game road trip.
Not so fast said Paul Stastny, Jordan Staal, and Teuvo Teravainen. The Carolina trio managed to tie it up at 4-4 with about 7 minutes remaining in regulation. Then, Sebastian Aho put it away for the Hurricanes in overtime.
Three stats from the game:
– Kevin Fiala scored in the second period, extending his team-leading point total to 53 points (18G, 35A).
– Kempe leads the team in goals, adding No. 21 and 22 to his totals.
– Drew Doughty had two assists in the game. That was his 112th career multi-point game, surpassing Rob Blake (111) for the most by a defenseman in franchise history. He also reached the 600-point mark of his career; becoming the first Kings defenseman in franchise history (and ninth skater overall) to reach that milestone.
