Ontario held a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes on Wednesday night in Calgary, however just five minutes into the third period saw them down by a pair of goals and they were never able to mount a comeback vs. the Wranglers.
Ontario had controlled the pace of play early on, even doubling the Wranglers in shots, 20-10, in the opening period. Lias Andersson scored the lone goal of that frame; it was a power play marker, coming after he pounced on a loose puck in front of the net. Although Quinton Byfield wasn’t credited with an official assist on the play, he caused havoc at the crease, allowing Andersson space in the slot to convert.
Andersson notched his second goal of the evening four minutes into the middle frame. Reign captain T.J. Tynan fed Andersson a pass after intercepting the puck in the Wrangler zone, Andersson quickly fired it towards the net and it found its way over the netminder after deflecting off a stick. As the period moved along, Ontario lost steam. They took three minor penalties, of which Calgary managed to cash one in to cut the lead in half.
In the third and final frame, perhaps the back-to-back road games had caught up with Ontario. The Wranglers first pair of goals in the period came immediately following a turnover by Helge Grans. Just over a minute later, Calgary notched their second shorthanded marker of the night, and eventually an empty netter.
Ontario will head into the holiday break with a bitter taste in their mouths, knowing they may have been just 20 minutes away from earning a split in Calgary and ending the trip with a win.
