‘When will the LA Kings recall Quinton Byfiled back to the NHL?’
It’s one of the most popular questions among hockey fans on social media over the past month or so, and largely for two reasons: (a) the Kings have been fairly inconsistent; thus, people want roster changes and (b) some people are paying attention to his performance in the AHL.
Since making his 2022-23 season debut with the Ontario Reign, Byfield has been a point-per-game player. His 14 points (9G, 5A) in 14 games includes a hat trick against Bakersfield in early December.
As we originally reported, the rough plan was to keep Byfield in the American League until around Christmas. And with the NHL Holiday Roster Freeze now in effect, the 20-year-old center will be with the Reign through at least next week. At 11:59pm on Monday, NHL rosters became frozen (trades, waivers, etc.) and will remain that way until 12:01am on Wednesday, December 28. However, there are a few scenarios where a move can still be made, largely centered around filling roster needs created by injuries.
Essentially, this means — assuming everyone on the main roster remains healthy — Byfield won’t be with the Kings for their games vs. Anaheim (Dec. 20), Calgary (Dec. 22), Arizona (Dec. 23), and Vegas (Dec. 27). His earliest call-up would be prior to the game in Colorado on Dec. 29, or most likely before the New Year’s Eve game vs. Philadelphia.
This also means Rasmus Kupari and Jordan Spence will be with the Kings through the same time period.
Ontario is currently in Calgary, where they’ll open a two-game set on Tuesday night.

Who goes on waivers? Hopefully it’s Lemieux. Always taking penalty’s and just doesn’t have that chemistry with Lizotte anymore. I say waivers because not sure if he is he worth a draft pick?
