Colorado defeated Ontario 7-3 on Saturday night, splitting the series at one a piece.
Special teams were not efficient for the Reign, as they were only able to capitalize on one of six power play opportunities and killed off two of the Eagles four-man advantages. Pouring salt in the wound, Ontario failed to score on a five-minute power play, while allowing a short-handed goal against.
Lias Andersson was one of the lone bright spots, collecting a goal and an assist. This brought his total to four points in the two-game series. Overall, the Swedish forward contributed on four of the five goals his team produced on the out of state road trip.
Colorado broke the ice just over seven minutes into the game, however Ontario answered back just 30 seconds later thanks to Alan Quine.
Already trailing 2-1 entering the second period, nothing went right for the Reign over the next 20 minutes. Phoenix Copley allowed three goals in five minutes, forcing coach Marco Sturm to swap in Matthew Villalta. Then, with about five minutes remaining before intermission, forward Austin Wagner was hit up high, which led to the major power play. He did not return in the game.
Despite Colorado eventually extending their lead to 7-1, Ontario did not throw in the towel. Akil Thomas potted a power play goal on a pass from Tynan. Three minutes later, Andersson cashed in on a 2-on-1 opportunity, finding the netminder’s five-hole.
