Three LA Kings prospects led Ontario to a 4-3 victory over Tucson on Sunday afternoon. Quinton Byfield, Sammy Fagemo, and Alex Turcotte accounted for all four of the Reign goals.
Fagemo opened the scoring with a power play goal late in the first period after picking up a loose puck and roofing it over Roadrunner netminder Ivan Prosvetov.
Ontario converted on the power play again during the middle frame, thanks to a highlight reel goal from Byfield. The Canadian native received a pass from T.J. Tynan, then scored with a play between his legs. Later in the period, the Reign found themselves on a 3-on-2 chance, which they executed to perfection. Byfield drove the net, taking a defenseman with him, which opened up space for Tyler Madden to find Turcotte, who cashed in with his first goal of the season. Byfield’s hockey IQ set everything in motion on this play.
Tucson eventually broke goalie Matt Villalta’s shutout, coming off of a wrist shot from the left circle. Rather than rattle the Reign, it seemed to inspire them. With just under five minutes to play, Turcotte made a pass through the middle of the ice to a speeding Byfield, who went in 2-on-1 and made no mistake, notching his second goal of the afternoon.
Byfield was clearly the best player on the ice, recording two goals and an assist. The 20-year-old center was just as effective with the puck as he was without; which was a nice rebound after his line had a disappointing showing just one day earlier.
Turcotte continues to find his game, as well. Over his last three games the 21-year-old forward has now recorded 4 points (1 goal, 3 assists).
In the end, Ontario was able to escape the Roadrunners comeback bid in the third period, even after allowing a pair of goals in under a minute. With a 4-3 victory, the Reign earned a split in the weekend series.
