Ontario Reign vs. San Diego Gulls; Only One Change for Possible Playoff Preview

April 16, 2022 By John Hoven

Friday night saw the Reign and Gulls play their final regular season game in Ontario; now they’ll close out their 12-game series in San Diego on Saturday night.

But… will it be the final time they play each other for a while? As things stand, they’re set to meet up again in a best-of-three first round matchup when the AHL Calder Cup Playoffs begin in a few weeks.

Ontario won all six games played in their home arena. However, they were only able to claim two victories in the five games played vs. the Gulls on the road thus far.

The Reign will make only one lineup change for tonight. As they look to even their road record vs. the Gulls at 3-3, they’ll turn back to regular goalie Matt Villalta. LA Kings prospect David Hrenak made his first AHL start last night, and the results were impressive.

Following tonight’s game in Ontario, they will close out their regular season schedule with three games in Colorado, followed by a single game at the brand new arena in Henderson. While no official start date has been set yet for the Calder Cup playoffs, we’re hearing they could begin as early as May 2.
