Ontario Reign vs. San Diego Gulls; Another Kings Prospect Set to Debut

April 15, 2022 By MayorsManor Staff

For their final home game of the 2021-22 regular season, Ontario will turn to LA Kings prospect David Hrenak in net.

Our latest scouting report on Hrenak https://t.co/TcZ5rNc0K5

— The Mayor | John Hoven (@mayorNHL) April 15, 2022

Originally drafted in 2018, Hrenak left St. Cloud as the all-time leader in wins, shutouts, and games played. During his time as a Husky, the program rose to becoming a national powerhouse, including four straight NCAA playoff appearances. They also played in last year’s championship game, losing to UMass. There was high hopes for a return visit this year, yet that was likely cut short due to Hrenak falling ill over the last few weeks of the season and having to sit out the team’s 5-4 loss to Quinnipiac in round one of the 2022 tournament.

Now fully recovered and ready to go, Hrenak will make his AHL debut after serving as the Reign backup netminder since signing his pro contract in late March. He’s currently on an ATO (Amateur Tryout) with the Reign and has a one-year Entry Level Contract with the Kings that is set to kick in next season.

Tonight will mark the second straight game between the Reign and Gulls. They’ll finish off their season series in San Diego tomorrow.

From there, Ontario will finish off their regular season with three games in Colorado and then wrap things up with a game at the brand new arena in Henderson. While no official start date has been set yet for the Calder Cup playoffs, they are believed to begin around May 5.

The first round of the playoffs will be played as a best-of-three series. And if the post-season began today, the Reign and Gulls would be playing each other.
