It’s often stated what a small community the hockey world actually is. Despite people coming from all over the world, players in an NHL locker room — or even ones sharing the ice in a game — often have more than one connection to those around them.
Just how connected are the 2021-22 Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks?
THE PLAYERS
Nicolas Deslauriers
• Teammates with Phillip Danault in Montreal (2017-19).
• Drafted by Los Angeles in the third round (84th overall) of the 2009 NHL Draft. Appeared in 188 games with Manchester of the AHL (primary affiliate), scoring 23-53=76 points from 2011-14.
Jamie Drysdale
• Won gold for Team Canada with Quinton Byfield at the 2020 World Junior Championship and silver together at the 2021 World Junior Championship and 2020 Hlinka Gretzky Cup.
• They also represented Canada Black together at the 2019 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge and were teammates on the 2019-20 OHL All-Stars.
Cam Fowler
• Represented Team USA with Jonathan Quick and Dustin Brown at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.
Ryan Getzlaf
• Won gold for Team Canada with Drew Doughty at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.
• Member of the 2003 NHL Draft class, along with Dustin Brown. Getzlaf was selected 19th by Anaheim, Brown 13th by Los Angeles.
John Gibson
• Coached by Los Angeles head coach Todd McLellan on Team North America at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.
Derek Grant
• Teammates with Olli Maatta in Pittsburgh (2018-19) and Viktor Arvidsson in Nashville (2016-17).
Hampus Lindholm
• Won gold for Sweden with Lias Andersson, Adrian Kempe and Viktor Arvidsson at the 2018 World Championship.
Isac Lundestrom
• Represented Sweden with Adrian Kempe at the 2021 World Championship.
• Won silver for Sweden with Lias Andersson and Jacob Moverare at the 2016 and 2018 World Junior Championships.
• Selected by Anaheim in the first round (23rd overall) of the 2018 NHL Draft, three picks after Los Angeles picked Rasmus Kupari.
Rickard Rakell
• Won gold for Sweden with Lias Andersson, Adrian Kempe and Viktor Arvidsson at the 2018 World Championship. Also won silver and bronze for Sweden with Arvidsson at the 2013 World Junior Championship and 2010 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, respectively.
• Represented Sweden with Adrian Kempe at the 2021 World Championship.
Buddy Robinson
• Teammates with Brendan Lemieux in Manitoba of the OHL (2017-18)
Kevin Shattenkirk
• Teammates with Lis Andersson (2017-19) and Brendan Lemieux (2018-19) on the New York Rangers.
• Represented Team USA with Jonathan Quick and Dustin Brown at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.
Anthony Stolarz
• Won bronze for Team USA with Calvin Petersen, Trevor Moore and Matt Roy at the 2021 World Championship.
• Teammates with Andreas Athanasiou and coached by Los Angeles head coach Todd McLellan in Edmonton (2018-19). McLellan served as head coach.
• Won an OHL championship with Olli Maatta in London (2012-13).
Troy Terry
• Teammates with Trevor Moore at the University of Denver (2015-16).
• Teammates with Matt Roy in Indiana of the USHL (2013-14).
Trevor Zegras
• Won gold for Team USA with Arthur Kaliyev at the 2021 World Junior Championship. Also represented USA together at the 2020 World Junior Championship.
• Played for the same Connecticut prep school (Avon Old Farms School) as Jonathan Quick, 12 years later (2016-17).
COACHING STAFF
Kings Assistant Coach Trent Yawney
• Served as Anaheim’s assistant coach for four seasons (2014-18) and as a scout in 2011-12.
• Also served as head coach of Anaheim’s primary development affiliate in Norfolk of the AHL (2012-14); helped develop John Gibson, Hampus Lindholm, Josh Manson and Rickard Rakell.
Ducks Assistant Coach Geoff Ward
• Coached Los Angeles assistant coach Marco Sturm as Boston assistant coach (2007-10). Also served under Sturm on Germany’s coaching staff at the 2016, 2017, and 2018 World Championships and 2018 Olympic qualifying (Germany qualified).
Ducks Assistant Coach Newell Brown
• Coached Los Angeles assistant coach Marco Sturm as Vancouver’s assistant coach (2011-12).
• Coached Los Angeles assistant coach Trent Yawney as Chicago’s assistant coach (1997-98).
Ducks Assistant Coach Mike Stothers
• Served as head coach of Los Angeles’ AHL affiliate for six seasons (Manchester 2014-15 & Ontario 2015-20). Led Manchester to a Calder Cup championship in 2015.
• Coached Sean Durzi, Calvin Petersen, Mikey Anderson, Tobias Bjornfot, Matt Roy, Rasmus Kupari, Blake Lizotte, Adrian Kempe, and Carl Grundstrom in the AHL.
