Goaltender Cal Petersen is having a great week and it’s still early on Wednesday morning.
Not only is he arriving at Kings Training Camp fresh off of signing a new three-year contract, he’s also bringing what could just be the best looking mask anybody has ever worn while policing the crease in LA.
Longtime readers of MayorsManor know where I stand on the most beautiful masks in team history. If you’re talking masks worn by LA Kings players (in the NHL), the list starts with some of the stuff Robb Stauber was doing back in the mid-90s.
If that pool is expanded to include any player or prospects to ever be involved with the franchise, J.F. Berube enters the conversation. He had several contenders, especially the tribute mask featuring Luc Robitaille and Rogie Vachon.
Now, Petersen seems to have outdone them all.
In recent seasons, Petersen has paid tribute to the Kings past by featuring a number of elements and iconography previously used by Stauber. For example, both of his masks last season (the primary black and white mask, along with his purple and gold Reverse Retro look), had a similar King graphic on top.
During his visit to Kings Of The Podcast a few months ago, Petersen said he’d be keeping that as part of his look for the 2021-22 season, while also promising something extra special in store, as well.
Along with Bishop Designs, we can now confirm Petersen more than delivered on those words.
And there could still be more to come.

Will he find a way to bring back the King chess piece?
