From their humble beginning as one of the NHL’s Second Six expansion teams in 1967, through winning two Stanley Cups in three years and becoming a league powerhouse in 2012-14, the LA Kings have experienced a rich hockey history over the past 50-plus years. Below are some key franchise moments that occurred on this date.

On August 12, 1987, the @LAKings signed defenseman Wayne McBean, who was selected fourth overall at the 1987 NHL Entry Draft, to a multi-year contract. McBean was the third youngest player in #LAKings' history when he made his NHL debut at 18 years and 231 days.#GoKingsGo pic.twitter.com/CYksd8d9mo

On August 12, 2005, the @LAKings signed free agent winger Valeri Bure to a one-year, $1.5 million contract. Bure did not appear in any regular season games with the #LAKings due to a back injury, and retired with 400 points in 621 career NHL games.#GoKingsGo pic.twitter.com/XyUzbLI72R
