World Junior Twitter Breakdown: USA vs Russia 12/25

December 25, 2020 By MayorsManor Staff

Welcome to the first day of the World Junior Championships.  Slovakia and Finland started the day with wins, let’s see if the USA or Russia adds their name to that list.

USA getting the early PP for top unit after the penalty drawn by Alex Turcotte:

Cam York-Trevor Zegras
Kaliyev-Boldy-Caufield

Russia scores with 11:53 to go in the first to make it 1-0.#USAWJC | #WorldJuniors

GOAL! Matt Boldy scores the first goal for Team USA to tie it up!#USAWJC | #WorldJuniors pic.twitter.com/zIG6R4PaHK

Take a look at the goal that tied it up at one!#USAWJC | #WorldJuniors pic.twitter.com/OKetOkRAQW

— USA Hockey (@usahockey) December 26, 2020

#WJC: Russians and Team USA tied 1-1 late in the 1st after LW Matt Boldy (MIN 1st/2019) was credited for tipping this point shot from LHD Cam York (PHI 1st/2019). Russia opened the scoring off a tip-in from C Vasily Ponomaryov (CAR 2nd/2020). pic.twitter.com/mhpKHBnQ4F

Alright, well, the goal was now changed back to York again. So at this point it's goal by Cam York (PHI), assisted by Cole Caufield (MTL) and Matt Boldy (MIN)…

Moving into the second period with each team trying to take back the lead.

Russia scores at the 3:12 mark of the second to make it 2-1.#USAWJC | #WorldJuniors

Russia gets a second goal from their fourth line.

This time it's Bardakov.

2-1 Russia

— CJ Fogler #BlackLivesMatter (@cjzero) December 26, 2020

The USA fell asleep in their own zone and allowed another goal.

Third goal from Russia's fourth line.

Ponomaryav pots his second of the game.

Russia 3-1, about 9 minutes remaining in the second period.

— John Hoven | The Mayor (@mayorNHL) December 26, 2020

Tough turnover from Jake Sanderson (OTT) goes right to Vasili Ponomaryov (CAR) who wires it for a 3-1 lead. Bad power play right into a goal against. Crowd or no crowd in WJC, have to mange the waves.

— Chris Peters (@chrismpeters) December 26, 2020

Spencer Knight (FLA) makes a terrible mistake, playing the puck right to Safonov who puts it into the empty net. Knight's eyes immediately to the bench after he gives up the goal. Didn't look great in the exhibition, shakier today. 4-1 Russia.

— Chris Peters (@chrismpeters) December 26, 2020

Spencer Knight (FLA) pulled from USA goal after allowing 4 goals on 12 shots. Dustin Wolf (CGY) now in net.

— Adam Kimelman (@NHLAdamK) December 26, 2020

There's Dustin Wolf's music. #Flames

— Ryan Pike (@RyanNPike) December 26, 2020

Here's both USA turnovers that led to goals on harmless dump-ins from Russia pic.twitter.com/xdTMag9UnN

Team USA heads into the third period down by three and looking for any type of spark to get back in the game.  It took 10 minutes, but they were able to get it.

Farinacci goal.

4-2 Russia still leads.

— John Hoven | The Mayor (@mayorNHL) December 26, 2020

John Farinacci (ARI) scores on a rebound to make it 4-2. Think Berard got away with a little bit of contact there. Either way, with 10:03 to go, USA has a little bit of life. Solid hard-working shift from USA's 3rd line.

— Chris Peters (@chrismpeters) December 26, 2020

.@jnacc9 cuts the Russian lead to 2! #WorldJuniors | @usahockey | #USAWJC pic.twitter.com/lTbFKoMC4n

DENIED!@dwolf2332 | @usahockey | #WorldJuniors | #USAWJC pic.twitter.com/MWJODVxgvE

— NHL Network (@NHLNetwork) December 26, 2020

Another power play for the U.S. with 3:05 to go. Still trailing 4-2.

— Chris Peters (@chrismpeters) December 26, 2020

Zegras GOAL

USA trail 4-3 with a few minutes remaining in regulation

— John Hoven | The Mayor (@mayorNHL) December 26, 2020

#TeamUSA mounting a comeback! @tzegras puts the US within one. #WorldJuniors | #USAWJC | @usahockey pic.twitter.com/SWREXPnVQF

— NHL Network (@NHLNetwork) December 26, 2020

Yegor Chinakov (CBJ) ices it with an empty-netter. Not sure what USA drew up in the timeout, but it certainly wasn't what happened on the ice. Russia so good on pucks, man. 5-3.

— Chris Peters (@chrismpeters) December 26, 2020

ENG
Russia will win

Tonight's loss puts extreme pressure on USA in their NYE game. A loss on 12/31 vs Sweden and they could be playing Canada in Game 1 (quarterfinals) of the playoff round.

First, USA plays again tmrw vs Austria. Coach will tell the players one game at a time.
