World Junior Twitter Breakdown: USA vs Finland 12/22 Exhibition

December 22, 2020 By MayorsManor Staff

The best tournament in hockey is back.  The World Junior Championship is taking place inside the bubble in Edmonton at Rogers Place.  Here at Mayors Manor we’re going to give you the quick Twitter breakdown of what you might have missed.  The US took on Finland in their first exhibition game on Tuesday night.

Lines for both teams…

Kings prospect Arthur Kaliyev took a quick penalty to start the game and it gave Finland the chance to grab the lead.

Later on in the 1st period Team USA got it back on the power play.

There’s the case for keeping The Arty Party in LA all season.
A rocket from the slot to even things in USA WJC pretournamwent action v Finland. Kaliyev would give the big club a goal scoring threat/presence they presently lack.

It's 1-1 after 1. Finland took a lot of penalties, which is good for USA to get the kinks worked out on their power play. Kaliyev took a really unnecessary 2+10 and the goal against Spencer Knight wasn't a good one, but the hockey was enjoyable and I just hope both teams have fun

The second period started off with the Cole Caufield show.

Finland’s power play added their second of the night cutting the lead in half to 3-2

Brock Faber made sure the Finland didn’t tie it up right after.

The third period started off with both teams switching their goaltenders.  Dustin Wolf came in for the United States and Roope Taponen for Finland.  The early parts of the third did not see much scoring, but did see some outstanding plays.

Late in the third period Alex Turcotte hit the post on a breakaway.

Outstanding forecheck, stick work, and anticipation by U.S. forwards who would have drawn three power plays in two minutes if European refs were involved. Usual suspects — Beniers, Slaggert, Boldy, Turcotte.

— Steve Kournianos (@TheDraftAnalyst) December 23, 2020

Finland pulled their goalie late and tried to tie the game, but in the end could not and the United States held on for a 3-2 victory.

USA 3-2 win

Best players in the game were:

1. Caufield
2. Zegras
3. Johnson

Post game quotes coming.

#WJC: RW Cole Caufield (U.S./MTL) and RHD Topi Niemela (FIN/TOR) named Players of the (Exhibition) Game.

Good tune up for the Americans as they prepare for defense-oriented Russia. Finns were physical and kept things to the outside but got little from their big boys at 5v5
