After more than 10,000 total votes throughout the tournament, it’s all come down to this. We started with all 31 of the NHL’s new Reverse Retro jerseys; through fan voting, we identified the top 16. They were then placed into a playoff bracket, where they were seeded by the number of votes received. And now we’ve reached the final round. Who will win the Reverse Retro Cup?
In the semi-finals, we saw a pair of rather decisive victories. In the Eastern Conference, Carolina captured 64% of the votes in their matchup with Montreal. The No. 1 seeded Hurricanes carved a path to the Cup Final with victories over the Lightning, Capitals, and Canadiens. As noted on a recent Kings of the Podcast episode, we considered the latter two very strong candidates in this competition.
In the Western Conference, by securing 76% of the votes received, it was the Kings advancing over the Avalanche. While not a significant upset, Colorado had entered the tournament with the No. 1 seed on their side of the ladder, just ahead of No. 2 LA. In earlier rounds, the newly designed forum blue and gold sweater had already taken out retro offerings from the Vancouver Canucks and Minnesota Wild.
Interestingly enough, the Kings will now face a Carolina jersey that actually features the Hartford Whalers look, and this comes after just defeating a Colorado jersey based on the old Quebec Nordiques styling. Even LA’s opponent in the second round largely featured a look from a team no longer in the NHL. While the Minnesota retro jersey features the Wild’s crest, the entire design of the sweater is really a tribute to the former North Stars.
Without any further ado, let’s get to it…
