After more than 10,000 votes were cast across Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, all eight matchups in Round 2 have been set for the King of Kings tournament.
While most of the opening 16 pairings were decided with relative ease, a number of them were fairly close until the final hours of voting. In fact, one matchup ended up being decided at the wire.
Round 1 matchups won with more than 85% of the vote:
Wayne Gretzky > Bill Flett
Anze Kopitar > Alexander Frolov
Ziggy Palffy > Mark Hardy
Dustin Brown > Jimmy Carson
Drew Doughty > Eddie Joyal
Dave Taylor > Jay Wells
Luc Robitaille > Steve Duchesne
Butch Goring > Mike Murphy
Round 1 matchups won with less than 80% of the vote:
Rogie Vachon 79% > Lubomir Visnovsky 21%
Marcel Dionne 74% > Jarret Stoll 26%
Rob Blake 72% > Marty McSorley 28%
Bernie Nicholls 64% > Tony Granato 36%
Kelly Hrudey 63% > Charlie Simmer 37%
Kyle Clifford 61% > Tomas Sandstrom 39%
By the thinnest of margins, this was the closet race of Round 1:
Mattias Norstrom 53% > Jim Fox 47%
How close was it? Norstrom-Fox ended in a 50-50 draw via Instagram voting, so it was tallies on other social media platforms that actually decided the winner.
And then there was the matchup we figured would be much tighter than it actually was; yet the battle of Conn Smythe winners wasn’t even really that close at all.
Jonathan Quick 81% > Justin Williams 19%
Now, with all of that completed and in the books, it’s on to Round 2.
As noted in the original announcement, the rules for the tournament are pretty straight forward. Each morning leading up to Game 1 of the regular season, a new matchup will be featured in a poll across all MayorsManor social media accounts, giving fans the opportunity to vote for their choice of player to advance in the tournament and ultimately determine who is truly worthy of wearing the crown and claiming the King of Kings title. So, look over the bracket and get ready to start voting!
