With the Los Angeles Kings in Boston Tuesday night, the date marks more than just an annual trek out east for a game against one of the league’s original six clubs. February 9th is also the day the team was awarded one of the “next six” franchises in 1966. In honor of that anniversary, the Kings will wear their vintage purple and gold jerseys versus the Bruins.
There will also be much more coming up before they even drop the puck in Beantown.
Since we first posted an article with details about the team’s upcoming plans – including a new grey jersey, a two-night Frozen Fury event in Las Vegas, the 2017 NHL All Star Game – we’ve continued to work our usual list of sources to dig up even more information. Building on a team press release today, outlining several plans for the coming year, we can tell you that at least one detail is still being pulled together. While it was mentioned that the Kings will wear a series of older style jerseys during next season, honoring the different eras in their sweater collection, there is at least one jersey that still remains a TBD item. From what we’ve gathered, it has not yet been determined if the Burger King jersey worn during the 1995-96 campaign will be included in the rotation.
On a more pressing note, prior to the game in Boston Tuesday night, the Kings will unveil a new 50th anniversary logo that will be rolled out as part of a new merchandise line and will eventually be used as the center ice logo at STAPLES Center when the puck drops on next season, before it changes over to the NHL All Star Game logo around New Year’s Eve.
We have been given multiple data points regarding what this commemorative logo may look like. From best we can tell, it is most likely to look like the mock up on the right side of the first image below. There was apparently some internal discussion about whether the trim color should be gold, ala what the NFL did with their recent 50th anniversary logo, or if they should use the more yellow looking “gold” from the team’s original colors.
One other little tidbit, if you remember the mock ups we shared regarding the new grey jersey design, it is sounding more and more like option No. 5 is closest to the actual design they will be going with. For more on the Kings’ 50th anniversary, be sure to see the links below.
As usual, thanks to MayorsManor artist Justin Cox for the logo mock ups. Also, we would like to thank longtime correspondent Jonathan Davis for helping us chase down several leads on the logo design.
