Tyler Toffoli’s first full interview back in LA

March 11, 2013 By John Hoven

While the rest of the Kings were back in the locker room, showering and later attending a pre-game meeting, rookie Tyler Toffoli was still out on the ice this morning. After about a full hour of practice, drills and extra work, he made his way to the back and had this to share…

– On what went down in Manchester yesterday: “I was going to the rink and getting changed for my game, and Mark Morris came in and he was on the phone and he told me to go in his office and that’s when I kind of got the idea that I was going to go up because, he doesn’t usually come in. He was still in his coat and everything. I was really excited when he told me, I was pretty fired up.”

– On who he called first: “I called my parents, my girlfriend and they were just as excited as I was.  It’s a pretty huge opportunity for me and I’m going to soak it all in, and if I get in the lineup I’m just going to do what I can to stay here.”

– On all the congratulatory calls and texts: “A lot of the people, a lot of my friends back home, I haven’t really talked to them a whole lot because I’m not in Ottawa anymore. So, just hearing from them again, they’ve been busy with work and stuff, so getting to keep in touch with them was pretty cool.”

– Reflecting on his thoughts when he left LA after training camp in January: “Coming here for camp was just a great opportunity for me as well, and going back to Manchester I wanted to keep doing what I was doing and I’ve been having a pretty good season so far since I’ve been back. So it’s a really exciting time.”

– A good season (laughing), 28 goals among the league leaders: “You always want to do better than what you’re doing. I’ve been scoring lots of goals, and been working on my game and I feel like my game’s been coming along pretty good.”

– What specifically have you been working on? “The things I do well obviously, but at the same time working on my skating. My defensively play and just being more aware all over the ice and I think I’ve been doing a pretty good job so far.”

– On Manchester being pretty hot lately, winning games: “When you’re winning it makes the game a lot more fun and we’ve been playing well, like you said, and winning lots of games and scoring lots of goals getting lots of opportunities. It’s been a lot of fun right now and we’re trying to sneak ourselves in the playoffs.”

– On following the Kings from Manchester: “You follow it so much because you never know, one guy gets hurt you don’t know who’s going to go up or anything. So, I’ve been watching games. There’s so much time in Manch, I mean you skate in the morning and then you don’t do anything the rest of the day. So you have to find something to do so all the boys are talking are always talking about it at the rink and just keeping our eye on what’s going on.”

– On tweeting about the sun (see links below for more on his love for tanning) and then getting the call up: “”Oh yeah me and Andy(Andreoff) have visited the tanning beds a few times just to keep ourselves a little tan.”

– So the truth is out, Andreoff does tan? “Yeah but just twice, that’s it, just twice.”

– On how the Kings might use him: “I just got in last night, so I came to the rink this morning, I just came out and practiced, I don’t know how long I’ll be here or if I’m going to get into the line up so I’m going to stay and do what I can to stay here as long as I can.”

– On today’s morning skate: “Definitely a little different, I’m used to playing on game days, So, it’s a different feeling. Getting a little extra skate in was good and I’m excited to be here. The Kings are doing great right now and hopefully I can be part of it.”

– On landing at LAX: “I took a taxi to the hotel last night and went right to bed.”

– On hearing from Muzzin, who is lonely at the hotel: “Well he texted me…That’s what I’ve heard (about Muzzin being lonely), so I’m excited to keep him a little bit of company…I’ll probably be spending a lot of my time in his room (playing Xbox).”
