The Kings will host their second and final Legends Night of the season later today when they honor Kelly Hrudey. Here’s what two of the current players had to say when asked about the former goaltender and the overall importance of teams recognizing past players…
– Mike Richards on Hrudey: “I remember watching him play. It was a while ago, but I do remember watching him play. The helmet and the bandana underneath is something I think you remember as a kid. Obviously a good goaltender. He’s done a lot not only while he was playing, but now as an analyst too. So he’s done a lot of things for hockey. So it’s nice to see him being honored.”
– Richards on these types of events strengthening his ties to the Kings: “I think just hockey in general. As a kid, I obviously watched it a lot. To see some of these players (is great), I got to play with Lappy. Now, Kelly, who like I said, he’s done a lot for hockey, not only LA hockey, but hockey in general. It’s nice to see them honored and getting the respect that they deserve.”
– Anze Kopitar: “It’s nice. We’ve done this for two or three years now, where we’re bringing back the legends. When a guy like Marcel comes back, and Luc, Kelly, Bernie, and Lappy came back – it’s nice to see them come back. You talk about them after the game or just the day before the game. It’s pretty surreal, because they’re all obviously up there in NHL history really. And it’s really nice to have a night like that. It’s obviously well-deserved on their part, and I think the Kings are showing a nice appreciation for all the services they’ve done around here.”
Hrudey was a guest on the MayorsManor show yesterday and it’s a must listen episode. He opens up about his relationship with Dean Lombardi, discusses preparing for his speech (and if he’ll cry), gives his real feelings about the Kings’ Burger King jerseys and tells some great stories about his playing days in LA. See the link below to get started now. You won’t be disappointed.
