Lombardi on Doughty’s conditioning and Ontario, Canada

Nearly every LA Kings player was regularly featured on MayorsManor during the lockout. The one guy who managed to slip through the cracks a bit was defenseman Drew Doughty. He came on the MM show in late October to tell some funny stories and Jeff Carter says he saw him at Christmas time, but it’s been pretty sparse other than those brief contacts.

Even earlier this week, after news broke about the new CBA, Dustin Penner was worried – “I haven’t talked to him. I’m not sure they even have cell towers in London yet.”

That’s London, as in Ontario, Canada – not England.

“I don’t know what it is about that place,” Colin Fraser said with a laugh, speaking about Doughty’s hometown pride.

Of course, one of the main reason anybody asks about Doughty these days is to find out about his conditioning. Much was made about it over his first few years in the league and last season he came into camp a step behind after a much publicized contract dispute.

But, this time around, it looks like GM Dean Lombardi has kept a close on things – even though he wasn’t allowed contact with his players during the lockout.

“The rumor is, it’s pretty good,” Lombardi told MayorsManor, when asked about Doughty’s current physical shape. “The one thing about Ontario, it’s a huge place, but when it comes to hockey, it’s like Mayberry. So, everybody knows everything. The rumors so far are good. I got it right from Floyd in the barbershop.”
