News flash for those not fully in the loop here, Jonathan Bernier isn’t the only top goalie prospect in the LA Kings organization.
Although he went undrafted, allowing GM Dean Lombardi to sign him as a free agent in October 2008, Martin Jones looks to be the real deal. In fact, MayorsManor slotted him number one overall in our Kings’ prospect rankings last September (linked here).
The 6-foot-4 native of British Columbia played four years of junior hockey with the Calgary Hitmen – culminating with the 2009-10 season, where he was named the WHL’s top goalie, playoff MVP and selected for the Memorial Cup All Star Team. He also earned a silver medal with Team Canada at the 2010 World Junior Championship, losing to Team USA in the finals (truly, one of the best hockey games you’ll ever see!).
Over the last two seasons he’s been splitting starts in Manchester with Jeff Zatkoff, who departed for Pittsburgh this past July. Now poised to take over as the Monarchs starter, Jones joined us on today’s show to talk about what he’s looking forward to this season and a few other related topics…
– No training camp in LA this year due to the lockout
– Zatkoff leaving the Kings organization
– Quotes from Terry Murray and Bill Ranford
– Mentoring Kings 2011 draft pick, Chris Gibson
– The possibility of joining twitter
– Plus, we play a game of Word Association with names like Voynov, Nolan, Hickey and Clune

We’ll be back early next week with another live show or two – featuring several of the Kings players and top defensive prospect Jake Muzzin. If you missed last week’s episode, be sure to head over here – we talked in depth about several of the Kings’ Russian prospects. We also chatted with Cinderella drummer Fred Coury recently. He’s the man behind the Kings goal song you here inside Staples Center. For some music and hockey talk, click here. Finally, Colin Fraser dropped by last week to fill us in on his summer vacation and dish on a few teammates. Listen to that interview here.
