As mentioned on twitter earlier this week, Dustin Penner has now officially re-signed with the LA Kings for another year.
It’s been a wild ride for the two-time Stanley Cup Champion. As we’ve heavily chronicled here on MayorsManor, PennerMania was running wild in the weeks after he was first traded to LA in February 2011. Segments of the fans and media had already turned against him by that summer – even though he never lost his sense of humor about things. After declaring he was more fit and ready for this past season than ever before, his regular season numbers were far less than he had hoped for, just 7 goals and 10 assists.
However, he was there when it mattered most and played a huge role in the Kings winning their first Stanley Cup in franchise history. Of his 11 points in 20 post-season games, none were bigger than his series clinching overtime goal in Game 5 of the Western Conference Final vs. Phoenix.
His new one-year deal (worth $3.25 mil) is a fair compromise for both sides. Kings GM Dean Lombardi showed loyalty to a player who helped in the post-season and Penner was true to the words he shared with us way back in training camp – he wants to thank Lombardi and the entire organization for sticking by him during what’s been some extremely difficult times.
