The one thing Matt Greene never wants to see again, ever!

October 21, 2011 By John Hoven

Penner – on the plane or the Space Shuttle?

About a month ago, while we were collecting sound bites for an upcoming podcast, Matt Greene made of an offhanded comment when asked ‘Who will be the worst dressed player on the trip?’

After selecting Dustin Penner he added ‘because you never know what he’s going to pull out that bag.’ And little did he know how true those words would end up being.

Before the team was even in the air and on their way to Germany, Jonathan Quick snapped the photo to the left. It captured Penner settling in on the plane, looking more like he was getting ready to go surf the Atlantic than fly over it.

So, just what was the big left winger wearing?

“It’s something you hope to never see again on a human being, especially a bear like that,” said Jarret Stoll earlier this week. “He’s got a lot of stuff going on, that guy.”

Sounds like the comedy started early on the trip.

“Oh yeah, I think everyone gave him a couple jabs,” Jack Johnson shared. “If a guy’s bigger than you, you kind of leave him alone a little bit. But, Greener gave it to him the most.”

Although he may have had a lot to say about then, Greene’s trying to forget about it now.

“It’s something I’ll have a hard time getting out of my mind for a long, long time,” he said. “I haven’t started smoking yet. But, I might need a hypnotist just to make me quit thinking about that. Actually, I’ll take up smoking if he can get that thing out of my head.”

Knowing there are two sides to every story, Penner was given a chance to explain what the real story was.

“There’s two different parts to it. One, is the skins, which everybody wears. That’s for your legs and they help with circulation and guard against lactic acid build up. So, that’s the pot calling the kettle black,” he said, in reference to a few teammates taking shots at him.

“The other part, the shirt, it was developed here in Southern California. You’re supposed to wear it during flights and it helps with subscapular rotation and strengthens muscles in your back – especially for 12 hour flights, it stops you from sleeping in uncomfortable positions and waking up sore.”

He went on to explain how he heard about it and mentioned a few other athletes that are using it, as well.

“My good friend is a chiropractor down in Newport Beach and he works with a guy named Tim Brown, who’s worked with a lot of guys – like Larry Hamilton, Shaquille O’Neal, Tiger Woods. It’s called Intelliskin. MLB pitchers are using it while they pitch now too, they wear it underneath their shirts. There’s some hockey players using it as well, like Joffrey Lupel. So, It’s just another tool you can use.”

As for Greene, he claims to know exactly what it is – “visual torture.”
