Wild 4, Coyotes 1 – Locker Room Quotes

Following the Minnesota Wild’s 4-1 road win over the host Phoenix Coyotes on Thursday, here’s what was being said in both locker rooms…

Dave Tippett on the game:

“We had chances to capitalize and we didn’t capitalize and they capitalized on their chances- that’s the way it goes sometimes.”

Tippett on tonight’s game:

“Well, if you wanted to look at scoring chances in the game, we’re looking to capitalize on scoring chances, just simple as that. We had some grade ‘A’ chances we didn’t capitalize and we made some mistakes that they capitalized on their chances, that’s the difference in the hockey game.”

More:

“This is a game we knew it was going to be tight checking and every play counts and we didn’t get it done.”

Shane Doan on the game after Phoenix tied it up:

“We thought we were going to play the same exact way. We were going to find a way to win that game. We had opportunities to score and we didn’t score. Give them credit, they found ways to score when they got theirs and we didn’t. In a game like that you have to put as much onus on the guys that are trying to score as the guys who are trying to stop them. We’ve got to find ways to score there.”

Doan on his team’s psyche after tonight’s game:

“Frustrated that we didn’t score more than one. Come on, we’ve got to get more than one. If we have that many opportunities we have to get more than one. I’m disappointed that we let an opportunity to try to separate ourselves from them get away. Then we’ve got to chase them, (you) never want to be doing that.”

Mikkel Boedker on moving past tonight’s game:

“It’s tough. From now on we’ve got to win every game and obviously when you drop one, and to a team that’s ahead of you in the standings now, that’s obviously tough and were going to be in the chasing mode now, but that’s something that we have to do and we have to just put our heads down and keep working at it. We never want to lose at home as we’ve done lately but it has to start on Saturday.”

Boedker on the game:

“Obviously, they come out and work hard and that’s all they do for three periods and we have a full squad almost, we’re missing ‘Z’ (Zbynek Michalek), I think, and Chipper (Kyle Chipchura), but other than that, as you said, we’ve got to keep the foot on the pedal.”

Mike Yeo on the play of Minnesota Niklas Backstrom:

“Outstanding, even the one goal, I mean he made two great saves right before that, you could tell he wanted the net and wanted this opportunity. Needless to say, we are extremely pleased with his performance.”

Yeo on his team’s psyche right now:

“It is a matter of little things. That’s what we said right from the start, its little things that end up being the difference and we are doing a much better job with that. I also think a huge part of it is we have been able to push aside what’s been going on; if we are winning then we put it behind us and focus on the next one. I think that is one thing we weren’t doing well. When we were losing games we were carrying that baggage into our next game with us…”

Yeo on putting his team’s losing streak in the past:

“You’re never as bad as you think you are and you’re never as good as you think you are. Right now, the way it’s been going is the other direction, we have to keep that in mind and we can’t start thinking that we are too good here, we have to recognize that there is a lot of work that needs to be put in and we need a lot of great performances every night in order to win hockey games.”

Niklas Backstrom on how he needs to play well while other players are out:

“I don’t know if I am thinking about that. I think that it’s every time you go out there and get a chance to play. If the goalie doesn’t play well, teams hardly ever have any success. It’s for a goalie to play well every time there so, for me, or for the rest of the guys here we can’t think of who is in the lineup or whose out. We have to just go out there and focus on your own game and play the way you can.”

Backstrom on his team’s winning streak:

“I think we still want to play better and improve, we are taking small steps. We are doing the small details right and battle hard.”

Justin Fontaine on when was the last time he had a hat trick:

“I don’t know, I think my junior year of college, I think that was my last one. They aren’t the easiest thing to come by, but I got some bounces tonight and a lot of guys played well tonight, I mean our whole team did. Starting with Backstrom, he made some big saves tonight.”

Fontaine on his limited playing time:

“…You just have to pay your dues, work every day and learn every day. Especially with the guys we have in the locker room and the great leadership. It’s definitely a learning experience and you just adapt and continue to grow your game.”
