Raw locker room quotes from Kings 5-1 loss to Coyotes

Raw quotes from the Kings locker room…

– Matt Greene on how he feels following first pre-season game:

“Rusty. We don’t have a lot of time to get going, so we have to clean it up.”

– Greene on if having half the guys in LA and half in Phoenix had anything to do with it:

“No, you have to get yourself going, that’s it. You get pumped 5-1, there’s probably something you’re not doing right. Right now, at this point in camp, you have to worry about your own game and not worry about where other guys are playing.”

– Greene on the Coyotes’ speed through the neutral zone:

“Yeah, they accomplished what they wanted to. They were getting chances off the rush and the end zone. We have to clean it up.”

– Greene on if he had heard about the Nolan hit in Phoenix:

“I haven’t heard anything, just got off the ice.”

– Derek Forbort’s thoughts on his first game at Staples Center, where he was drafted in 2010:

“It was cool. It was a lot of fun playing out there. Obviously we didn’t have the game we wanted to, but it was a lot of fun getting out there with these guys and competing.”

– Forbort on being paired with Greene:

“Yeah It’s been good. He’s kind of taken me under his wing and shown me things. With the North Dakota background, he’s helped me a lot with that kind of stuff. It’s been good playing with him, I really like it.”

– Forbort on if he had difficulty adjusting to the speed:

“I felt pretty good out there, besides that one stupid play. I felt good, comfortable, and thought I was making good plays. I felt pretty comfortable out there.”

– Forbort on if turning pro late last year helped with the adjustment:

“Yeah, it helps a ton. Getting to know the guys and just the system that this organization plays. It was good. I’m glad I did that at the end of the year and it’s kind of cool to get used to that pro hockey.”

– Mathieu Garon on how felt in his first game back in LA:

“I felt okay. I couldn’t make the big saves at the right time. The fourth goal was a bad goal. It’s a little disappointing. I wanted to leave a good impression. That didn’t go the way I wanted to.”

– Garon on shooters vs goalies in pre-season…any trouble tracking the puck:

“The hardest part was probably dealing with traffic. We practice it a lot but it’s hard to create it during practice, and I felt like the first period I always had a guy in front of me and I struggle a little bit with that.”

– Garon on his playing time:

“They told me this morning I was going to play a full game.”

– Garon on the plan going forward:

“I don’t know, I’m just here trying to live day-by-day, and we’ll see what happens.”

-Garon on if it was strange coming back to Staples Center in a Kings jersey:

“A little bit. It was different but at the same time it was a lot like it was eight years ago.”

– Scott Sabourin on being satisfied with his game:

“Yeah, it’s good to get the first one out of the way. The pace was a little quicker than I’m used to, but I felt good out there.”

– Sabourin on the importance of getting physical:

“Yeah, I mean especially if I don’t get a hit in early or a fight in early, I feel like I sleep through the game. I know I have to protect the guys out there and get in on the forecheck when I can, so I just try and get it out of the way early.”

– Sabourin on linemate Nick Shore:

“He’s been great so far. I thought me, him, and Zykov had a lot of chemistry out there. We had our chance, and soon enough we’re going to start finding the back of the net.”

– Sabourin on being part of the most effective line tonight:

“Yeah, especially being young guys it’s nice to hear that. Hopefully we can keep it going in the future.”

– Sabourin on what was working, besides chemistry:

“We had our legs going – we’ve been in rookie camp for a week now and we’ve been going hard all summer. We’re just looking forward to getting into it here. So I guess excitement was probably it.”

  1. Really liked what I saw from Sabourin and Forbort. They both really impressed and were really good. They were a looooooot better than the veterans, which is kinda sad (yes they had a leg up so to speak having been through rookie camp for a week but that seems a bit of an excuse to me)

  2. I’m guessing Greene said “You get thumped 5-1″… it’s a fairly common term in this part of the country (i.e., the Dakotas).
